The first part of Viktor’s internship had gone well and soon the second part would start. But in the time between, a problem had developed. His poison affinity had made every part of his life more difficult for Victor, school included. He couldn’t touch anyone without the risk of hurting them and that was exactly the problem with his studies and his internship: he wanted to make people better, cure them and help them, but his affinity did exactly the opposite. He couldn’t do his internship. The risk was too great.

He’d contacted Lamar and asked if they could talk in private. They’d agreed on a meeting place, a small café where Victor was going to right now. He dreaded cancelling his internship, but he couldn’t see any other way. It was something else his affinity was taking from him: his studies. Once Victor arrived he looked around to see if Lamar had already arrived.

One of the interns who had been very promising had asked him if they could meet in private in a small cafe. He wondered what the man wanted to talk about, since things had seemed to be going fine. Maybe there was something that the other wanted to see changed and if that was the case he would definitely hear him out. In a few years he might be in charge of the whole clinic, so it was good to know if there were things that he could do better.

He had arrived at the cafe a little early, making sure that he would be there already when Victor arrived. He had ordered a coffee, but it hadn’t arrived yet. They would probably wonder why he was just sitting there if he didn’t order anything otherwise. He saw Victor come in and raised his hand to grab the attention of the man. ”Over here.” He called him over.

Victor heard Lamar call him and turned towards the source of the sound. The man was already seated at one of the tables. Waving to let the man know he’d noticed him, Victor made his way over to Lamar and sat down on the chair opposite of him.

“Hey,” he greeted his mentor. “Thanks for meeting me. Nervously, he plucked at one of his gloves. He’d practised what he wanted to say, but that didn’t make this any easier. “I’m sorry for calling you out of the blue like that,” he started. Everything had been going so well with his internship and if it wasn’t for his affinity, Victor would’ve happily returned to the clinic. Everything had already been brought in order for him to continue there, but it just wasn’t possible anymore.

He watched as Victor came over, he could tell that the other seemed nervous, so it had to be something serious that he wanted to talk about. He had suspected as much seeing as how he hadn’t just talked to him at the clinic about it. When Victor immediately started to apologise for asking him to come out here, he held up his hand to stop the other from talking. ”No need to apologise for that,” He told the man, if he hadn’t been available he wouldn’t have been able to come that was how it was.

”Do you want to order something to drink first?” He asked. He understood that the other had something to talk about, but it might be better if he could calm down a little first and something like tea might help with that. Though that was up to Victor of course, they could just have the conversation and stop there, that would be fine too.

Victor stopped as soon as the other held up his hand and then nodded when he was told to not apologise. He really should get his nerves under control so he could get to why he’d called Lamar here. But first something to drink would be nice. “Yes, that sounds nice,” Victor replied and waited for a waiter to arrive and take his order: coffee.

Waiting for the order to arrive, however, was not good for his nerves and so Victor gathered up the courage to tell Lamar what he needed to say. “I need to cancel my internship,” he told the man seriously, though he was unable to keep the sadness and disappointment out of his voice. Victor mentally encouraged himself to go on: he’d practised this a thousand times, he could do this. “I recently acquired a poison affinity. It would be a danger to the patients.” Relief flooded over him once he’d gotten the words out, but fear just as easily took over again as he waited for Lamar’s response.

Lamar told the waiter his own order while Victor ordered a coffee. He himself was more of a tea person, so he ordered that. Now they just had to wait till the order arrived, but it seemed like Victor wasn’t going to wait for now. So there was really something that he needed to get off his chest. He couldn’t hide the surprise from his face when the man told him that he had to cancel the internship. Especially when he heard the sadness and disappointment in his voice. There had been no reason to do this in his eyes, so he didn’t understand it yet.

Still he kept his mouth shut as he listened to the reasoning. He could understand why it might be a reason to stop his internship, but he had only just acquired the affinity. With time it might get better, so wasn’t it a bit rash to just decide on this? ”I understand your reasoning.” He started. ”Are you sure about this? You can always try again once you have more control over your affinity?” He had been bad at his own affinity at first too, but with practice had learned how to use it.

Waiting for the waiter to come back only made him more nervous and so Victor gathered the courage he needed and told Lamar that he was forced to cancel his internship. Once the words were out, Victor anxiously awaited the man’s reaction. While the people he’d told about his affinity so far had reacted better than he’d expected, he was still scared for how Lamar would respond.

Victor looked at Lamar with wide eyes when the man told him he could always try again once he had more control over his affinity. “I’d love that,” Victor said, hopeful. “If you still want me then.” He hadn’t expected that Lamar would want him to come back at a later time, but if that was a possibility he’d take it with open arms. During his internship the previous semester, he’d loved working at the clinic. The work had been interesting and the coworkers fun to be around and very knowledgeable so he could learn from them. “I have no idea when or if I’ll learn to control it though,” Victor added, unsure how to navigate his affinity.

He had wanted to make sure that Victor had taken everything into consideration, since it would definitely impact things, not just things now, but in the future too. But it seemed to him like Victor had thought it through for now at least and that the affinity itself was still an uncertainty, but that might get better with time. ”Yes, I have no reason to not welcome you back if it came to that.” He had seen things happen with affinities before, people often came when something had gone wrong with an affinity, though things going really wrong with a poison affinity were extremely rare. But that was something that Victor would have to find out for himself.

”It differs per person how long something like that takes, I wasn’t proficient with my own either.” He told the man. Though he had had his affinity for quite some years now, at the start it had been very hard to control it and sometimes just nothing happened at all. ”Just try to not let your emotions run your affinity wild.” That was something he could definitely advise Victor. That was mostly when affinities weren’t in control. He himself had become calmer over the years, but even he could get angry when it came down to it and then he could drown in his own emotions if he wasn’t careful. Having an affinity wasn’t always easy.

Victor took in a relieved breath. He hadn’t expected that Lamar would want him to come back when he was able to, so it felt like some pressure was lifted from his shoulders when the man said he had no reason not to welcome him back. “Thank you,” Victor said, appreciating that he would get a second chance once he’d learned how to live with his affinity.

Hearing that the man hadn’t been proficient with his affinity either at the start reassured Victor somewhat. “How did you learn to control it?” Victor had looked for information, but it wasn’t like there was an easy how-to-guide he could follow.

Victor nodded at the advice. “How do I do that?” he wondered out loud. Because, while it sounded helpful, he didn’t understand how he could keep his emotions from affecting his affinity.

He knew just how hard it could be to get a spot as an intern somewhere and if Victor hadn’t proven himself he wouldn’t have offered this as easily, but the young man had proven himself plenty already. And if he could help him get back to it once he was ready, that was even better.

He had expected the question once he started talking about his own affinity, Victor was probably looking for a way to control his own. Yet it was different per person and different per affinity too. His wasn’t one that could easily harm people, it would only affect himself mostly. How often he had been dehydrated that his father had even had to give him a drip to keep his fluids up. ”Practice is what it takes, even if you make mistakes along the line.” He started, watching Victor carefully.

Poison was one that was a lot harder to practise with. It really depended on what Victor was willing to try it on really. He understood that he didn’t want to risk hurting living things, he could understand that, he wouldn’t have wanted to either. ”In your case, you might want to try it on flowers or something like it.” You needed to get a feel for when you did use it and when you didn’t. ”Learn to know the difference between when you’re using it and when not, it will make it easier to control.” As if demonstrating he pulled a small amount of water from the air, forming it into a bubble.  ”And yes, I have dehydrated myself plenty of times while trying this at the start.” He added, making sure that Victor knew that making mistakes was fine to a certain point.

Practice. He knew that. What he didn’t know was how he could practice. Inanimate objects couldn’t be poisoned and if he tried his affinity out on people or pokémon they could get hurt, or worse. When Lamar came with a solution to that problem, Victor couldn’t believe he hadn’t thought of that himself. Flowers still reacted to poison, but while it would be sad to see them perish, it wouldn’t hurt anyone if he practised on them.

Victor looked intrigued as Lamar pulled water out of the air, letting it float in between them. “I’ll try,” Victor promised the man before pointing to the blob of water and asking: “How long did it take before you could do that?”

At that moment, the waiter came back and handed him their drinks. Victor accepted his coffee before letting his hands retreat under the table where he plucked at his gloves.

Of course it differed from person to person how long it took for someone to be able to control their affinity and if they were ever able to control it completely. It did help when you had quite the calm personality, since extreme emotions might trigger the affinity happening. Victor told him that he’d try and that was really all he could do. He needed to learn to not be afraid of his affinity, to know when it might go wrong or when it was fine, but that would take time.

When he got asked how long it had taken him to be able to do what he had just done he almost wanted to lie, to make it seem like it wouldn’t take long, but before he had been able to do it a little it had taken months, years when it came down to really controlling it and even now it could go wrong if he were to lose himself in his emotions. Their drinks had been placed down on the table and he let the water go. ”It took months to be able to do something, years before I could control it properly.” He decided to be honest. ”It depends from person to person really how long it takes and how much effort you’re willing to put in it.” And other factors, but he was not going to name those for now.

Victor knew it wasn’t realistic, yet he still somehow hoped that Lamar would tell him that it’d be easy to learn how to control his affinity and that it wouldn’t take much time. That sliver of hope was quickly shattered. It had taken the man months before he could do something with his affinity and years before he could control it properly, often dehydrating himself in the process. Victor looked down at his coffee. The idea of living the coming years scared of poisoning someone at the slightest touch wasn’t a bright future.

But despite Lamar’s experience, the man couldn’t tell him exactly how long it would take him to get a grip on his affinity since that depended on multiple factors. “Maybe I’ll set a record,” Victor tried to joke that he might be able to learn how to control his affinity in record time. But humour wasn’t enough to keep reality at bay; he sighed. “But I don’t think it’ll be that easy.” He wondered how his life would look like until he had a grip on his affinity. Poison was dangerous and the measures he would need to take not to hurt anyone wouldn’t be light.

He could have lied, but that wasn’t something he liked doing. He was mostly straight with people, voicing facts mostly. When it came down to how he himself felt it differed from time to time, but this time Victor had asked him how it had been for him with his affinity. It was just that their affinities were different. His affinity couldn’t easily hurt others, mostly himself, though he was more than glad that he could use it for healing now too and really he couldn’t imagine himself without anymore.

”I wish I could tell you that it will be fine.” And with time and practice that would most likely be the case. The more in tune with his affinity he would get, the better it would go. But a poison affinity was a bit more fickle when it came down to that, a bit harder. ”Just don’t be too impatient.” Because things might go wrong then without him wanting to. ”Once you get control, it will feel more like a blessing than a curse really.” Being able to purify was something good after all, but he knew that people could also use it for the opposite, to poison. It was an affinity that would really depend on the person how it would be used.

Victor wished as well for Lamar to tell him it would be fine, but he knew that would be a lie. Learning how to control his affinity and how to live with it wouldn’t be easy and mostly it would take time.

It was difficult not to be impatient. Already Victor wished that he could just skip the hard way and find information on how to control his affinity right now. But that would be impossible, he knew that. He nodded at the advice. He couldn’t get impatient or take risk with a poison affinity. It could cost someone’s life if he did.

The idea that it would feel like a blessing instead of a curse gave Victor some hope. He sighed. “I hope so.” He drank some of his coffee, letting the beverage warm him. The knowledge that once he learned how to control his affinity he would be able to purify made him feel a bit positive, even if the road towards that wouldn’t be easy.

If affinities were easy to control from the moment you got them, it would make accidents with them a lot less frequent. Of course you still had the people who used their affinity for bad things on purpose, those would never completely disappear really. He had seen multiple people who had been affected by an affinity, but it really differed how they were affected. ”In the end it will be fine.” He hoped his words were true, normally as a doctor you weren’t supposed to give false hope, but he felt like that wasn’t the case this time.

”How have you been beside all this?” He decided to ask now that they had the time to speak with each other. He took a sip from his drink, while watching Victor. He really hoped that the affinity hadn’t been the main focus for the man recently, that there had been something else too. You would need good times to get through something like this and it was better if he didn’t shut himself off from others.
