No one lived their lives free of shame and regret. Ruìsāng, perhaps, knew these feelings better than many, but after a few tequila shots, the words were lost to him.

In the fog of tequila and forgotten words, Ruìsāng found himself in a bizarre predicament. He was sprawled on a stranger's bed next to a rope, alone in an apartment that wasn’t his. It was the kind of surreal scenario that could kickstart a murder mystery, yet the reality was far more boring as he waited for Mr. Stranger Danger to fetch another round of alcohol.

After firing off a nonsensical text mentioning the rope, he heard the door creak open, and he scrambled up, forcing a grin on his face. This man had been the epitome of dull, but somehow, he looked like he was a good lay.

Or so Ruìsāng guessed. It was possible. Who could tell? One moment, he was gearing up to make his move, and the next, he was consoling the man, his head nestled in Ruìsāng’s lap. What was he even crying about?

Arceus, Ruìsāng needed an escape route, and he needed it fast.

And so, Drunk!Ruìsāng executed a disappearing act, pretending to head to the bathroom but snagging the freshly purchased bottle of tequila on his way out. He staggered down the stairs, savouring the liberating touch of the cold night air.

Phone clutched in one hand, bottle in the other, he started texting again...

Only to collide with a stranger.

Yet another sleepless night. By now they are no surprise to him. He tries to counter them by first reading a bit, then clear his mind with a podcast. Sometimes it works, but not today. He never even took the time to undress himself and get ready for bed. All would be pointless anyway.

That is how he ended up outside again, walking down the street without really knowing where he was going. Qiān was besides him, also not paying as much attention as he should. It was late. He couldn’t blame him. Not that it mattered, at this hour the streets weren’t as busy anyway.

Guess the joke was on him.

Something blocks his path, walking into it with enough force that he staggers back. Only for two hands to grab him by his arms, making sure Míngzé never even came close to the ground. “What just—” Qiān makes a reassuring sound, so it is nothing serious. Everything was alright. Only what— or no who, did he walk into.

Rolling his shoulders he shrugs off Qiān’s hands. The support was a welcome one, but now Míngzé has no need for it anymore. He can stand up by himself just fine.

Woop!

And ‘woop’ he went, stumbling into a stranger before abruptly pushing himself back, a bit too forcefully. Too far back, in fact, as he lost his balance and plopped down unceremoniously onto his backside. Lucky for him, there was some cushioning (figuratively, not literally) on the ground; otherwise, that fall might have been a lot more painful.

Red eyes blinked up at the stranger in a drunken surprise. A figure cloaked in black, with long hair cascading down and golden eyes. The drunk man’s priorities were clear: clutching his precious bottle close to his chest was paramount, even amidst his clumsy descent. His phone, however, found itself abandoned on the ground.

You’re so high,” he observed, his gaze widening as he stared up at the mysterious stranger. His brow furrowed in confusion, but the drunk logic was swift to return. He glanced around, letting out a tipsy giggle, then bent over to retrieve his phone from the ground. Awkwardly, he managed to haul himself back up, wiggling his backside as if trying to shake off the dirt.

Now lemme tell you s’mthin, yeah?” he slurred, his words slightly muddled. “It ain’t neccessassassarily gonna be fun if they got rope.” He punctuated this statement with an exaggerated nod, as if he'd just shared the most profound wisdom of the century.

Smart.

Míngzé had never felt more lost in his entire life. Even being actually lost was nothing compared to this. There was a woop, then something hit the ground and— what?

“Qiān— did someone just fall?” he asks the pokémon quietly as if wanting to make sure that this stranger could not hear him. There was a sound which meant yes, someone did in fact fall. That explained what happened just now. With a deep, worried, frown on his face he looks down. The streetlights were not enough for him to really see anything, but somehow that was probably for the better.

The pokémon at his side carefully pulled at his shoulder, ushering him to follow, but the stranger finally opened his mouth. “Excuse me?” High? The worried look makes place for one of utter confusion. “I’m not— what?” Again he looks to the side at Qiān for help, but the pokémon is utterly worthless in this situation.

When the other starts moving, Míngzé can’t help but take a step back. What followed made everything clear as day; something was wrong with the man. “Why would someone have ropes?” he asks in his confusion, slapping Qiān’s paw away as he once again wants to remove him from this situation. And why would the other think they could be fun? Míngzé leans forward a bit, squeezing his eyes as if that would help. “Tell me, did you hit your head?” He fell down so there was a possibility he hurt himself in the process.

The other guy looked puzzled, and Ruìsāng couldn’t quite fathom why. He was puzzled too. Why were they both puzzled? Maybe it all made sense, and they were just not catching on. Why was he puzzled again? What had happened? Oh, yes, the ground. Was his bottle okay? Yes, the bottle was fine. He should get up.

After managing to stand and delivering his insightful remark about ropes and fun, the other guy appeared even more perplexed. Ruìsāng just arched an eyebrow, unsure what was unclear about his brilliantly articulate statement. He might be a little drunk, but he knew that ropes usually equaled fun. In this particular case, apparently not. ‘Learn from my mistakes,’ he tried to convey to the other.

The guy asked if he hit his head. Ruìsāng furrowed his brow and shook his head vigorously. “No, just my butt,” he replied with utmost seriousness. Because he hadn’t landed on his head. He’d definitely know if he did. See, he was doing perfectly fine.

Why are you here?” he wondered, genuine surprise lacing his words, as if the other man shouldn’t be wandering the streets at this ungodly hour– and that was the most astonishing thing that had happened tonight.

All Míngzé wanted was to clear his head, get some fresh air, and hopefully fall asleep as soon as he went to bed again. Bumping into someone, causing them to fall over, did not fit that picture.

Only his butt. “You sure?” he asked, slight worry falling over his face. In this dim light, his eyes were utterly useless; all he could do was trust the other’s word. If he said he did not hit his head, then he had no reason to question him. Still, he could not help but turn to Qiān, speaking to him as if the stranger was not even there. “Did he really not hit his head?” Another sound came from his side. No. Alright, then the man was— stupid maybe? Or no, there was another option. One more logical.

Before he could test his theory, however, the other asked him a question. This time without struggling to get the words out. “Going on an adventure,” he replied dryly with a hint of sarcasm. Now to test out his theory. Míngzé took a step closer, and another, until his suspicions were confirmed. A sigh rolled over his lips, and he started shaking his head. It was there, the faint scent of alcohol.

“You’re drunk.”

Confused, Ruìsāng rubbed his head, genuinely trying to figure out if there was a bump. Maybe the other guy was the one confused? It wouldn’t have surprised him. Ruìsāng felt the need to extend empathy to the other if he was this confused.

Apparently, the guy was embarking on an adventure. Ruìsāng's eyes widened with interest, and he leaned dangerously forward, nearly tipping over. “An adventure?” he echoed. “Count me in!” He’d always wanted to go on an adventure! “We should find a stick,” he declared sagely, like it was the most profound wisdom ever spoken. Every adventurer worth their name had a trusty stick.

You’re drunk.

Yeah, no shit. Tequila has that effect,” Ruìsāng nodded, utterly serious. He was not his mother. He wasn’t an alcoholic. Just incredibly, unbelievably drunk. Getting laid might have been part of the plan too, but well, not everything goes according to plan, right?

Maybe telling a drunk he was on an adventure was not the brightest idea. Not that it was a lie, this whole conversation has been an adventure. Yet the other sounded a bit too eager to join him on this so-called “adventure”. Good thing he never said they were in another city.

A stick. Míngzé blinks repeatedly. “A stick,” he repeats, trying to make sense of it in his head. “W— you know what, never mind.” First rope, now a stick.

Tequilla. That explained so much. Míngzé wrinkled his nose at the thought. All he knew about that drink was that people always made a face after drinking it. Surely it can’t be any good, so why would they drink it anyway? People were weird. “I’m sure it does.” Dealing with a drunk was not why he came out here tonight. Or ever.

“How about this,” he starts thoughtfully, one hand rubbing his chin as if he’s deeply in thought. “You find us a stick, a very good one, and I’ll wait right here until you return.” Then he could turn around and go home.

Ruìsāng's eyes widened in disbelief. “Never had any?” he echoed incredulously when the other man said he was sure it did. Tequila, to Ruìsāng, was like a rite of passage into the realm of adventurous nights. He couldn't fathom someone missing out on the salty, tangy, fiery experience of a good tequila shot, even if it was the cheap stuff. The whole salt-shot-lime ritual was practically a sacred tradition.

The man's suggestion to find a stick made Ruìsāng smirk. “And why would I search alone?” he retorted, his words slightly slurred but defiant. “The stick would help us both, you see. You could put something in there too.” He gestured dramatically with his bandaged hand, emphasising the point.

You don’t seem like a very nice adventurer, making me do all the work.” He pouted, feigning offence at the other man's apparent lack of cooperation. How dare he shirk the duties of their joint quest? Ruìsāng was all for fairness, especially when it came to finding a suitable adventurer’s stick.

Disgust was written all over his face at the mere thought of tequila. When the stranger asked him if he ever had some, he shook his head. Considering the nonsense coming out of this man’s mouth, Mingze was glad he’d never tried it. To be completely honest, he barely had any alcohol in his entire life. He never saw any reason as to why he should.

The worst part was that his plan failed. Although the thing with the stick became stranger every second. Míngzé sighed deeply and rubbed his eyes. This was exhausting. Vaguely he thought he could see the other move when he lowered his hand, but it was no more than a white blob surrounded by darkness.“In a stick?” How would they put something in a stick. Why was he even questioning anything the other said? He was drunk, of course it would not make any sense.

And now he was also a bad adventurer. Because he was not a team player. “It was your idea,” Míngzé countered, crossing his arms over his chest. No, he would not start a search for a stick. “Besides, Qiān wil find one for me,” he said with a lazy hand gesture to his pokémon who had no idea what was going on. He zoned out a long time ago. Even during the day he would not find a stick even if his life depended on it.

Ruìsāng let out an exaggerated sigh, his drunken stupor amplifying his sense of amusement at the other's confusion. “No, silly,” he slurred, a drunken grin tugging at the corners of his lips. “Not in a stick. On it. Clearly.” He gestured wildly, as if illustrating an invisible stick's surface area. To him, it made perfect sense.

The mention of a name, Qiān, drew a puzzled expression from Ruìsāng. “How many?” he mumbled, trying to grasp the concept, his thoughts swimming in a sea of alcohol. A thousand? A million? What? Servants? The idea of a wealthy companion intrigued him, and a wild thought crossed his mind.  “You’re rich? Do you have a bag?” he asked, envisioning a bottomless bag that could carry all their spoils, far superior to a mere stick..

Yet, a twinge of unease crept in. Adventure with someone wealthy was a dicey proposition. Would they understand the true essence of adventure? Ruìsāng squinted at the stranger, his intoxicated mind trying to comprehend. “What are you?” he wondered.

Míngzé gave up. Not in a stick, but on it. Why even question what the other said. He sounded so sure, as if everything he said was not utter nonsense. “That makes no sense at all.” There is nothing you can place on a stick either. Unless its a very large stick. No. He no longer wanted to think about it. Better to let it rest.

Too bad it only got worse. Even more confused as before he shook his head. He was even starting to get a headache from this man. “Not money, you idiot,” he breathed out that last part silently, more to himself. “Qiān, my pokémon.” Míngzé made a gesture towards the Inteleon next to him. By now the pokémon was leaning against the wall, almost dozing off.

He never knew dealing with drunks was this exhausting. Not that he could explain, that was why he went out this late at night. He could not sleep and hoped this might work. And it did, it worked a bit too well. What are you? He raised an eyebrow. Tired? Confused? Both. Definitely both. “Sober, unlike some,” he said, shaking his head.

Ruìsāng's words slurred slightly, his alcohol-laden confidence apparent as he responded to the other's confusion. “You clearly need to watch more movies,” he said, waving a hand dramatically. "In movies, people leave with sticks and stuff attached to them all the time. It's, like, a thing." He nodded emphatically, as if he had just revealed an important truth. Okay. Maybe not in many movies, but he had seen it more than once.

No need to be rude,” Ruìsāng pouted. “It’s not my fault you name your Pokémon after numbers. You see, mine has an actual name,” he proudly stated, pulling out a Pokéball from his jacket and presenting it as if unveiling a precious gem. Ruìsāng, in his intoxicated state, seemed to forget the social norms about displaying Pokéballs in public. “This is Lìeyàn.

What was the other? Sober, according to him. “Maybe you should try some,” he suggested, pointing a finger accusingly before nodding sagely. “Loosen up a bit. Live a little. You've got that stick way too far up there, my friend,” he added with a roguish grin. “Not the kind to carry anything.” At least then, the stick would have been useful. Though perhaps he would not want to use an arse-stick.

WHile the other was talking about movies with sticks, Míngzé was nodding like he was listening to a very interesting story. “Wow, you’re right, I clearly do.” This was some new top tier knowledge. “I’ll keep it in mind when I’m choosing my next movie,” he said in the hopes that it makes the other happy.

So it was his fault. Míngzé couldn’t help but roll his eyes at the accusation. “I’ll keep it in mind for the next one,” he said dryly. Pokemon names mattered very little to him. When he first got Qiān, he didn’t even want to name him. It was only because his parents told him that they needed one, that he came up with one. Confusion clouded his face once again when the other started talking about his own pokémon as if it was there. Had his pokémon always been at his side? Maybe it was very quiet and that was why Míngzé hadn’t heard it. He tried his best to see something in this dim light, but there was nothing. “What is it?” If there was another pokémon amongst them, he wanted to know which one.

He did not watch enough movies, the name of his pokémon wasn’t any good, and now his behavior was also bad. Without even giving it one thought, he shaked his head. “No, I’m good.” Even with a stuck up his arse, it could stay there for all he cared. “My life is wild enough as it is.” Not really, but the other did not have to know that. He had school, he had work. That was enough.

Can always come watch a movie with me,” Ruìsāng suggested, his grin widening mischievously as he raised his eyebrows, clearly enjoying the banter. Despite the alcohol, he knew the other would turn him down. See, he thought, even drunk Ruìsāng had some intelligence.

The other said he’d keep his advice in mind, to which Ruìsāng nodded and told him about his own Pokémon, Lìeyàn, who was named after the fire of her personality. It was normal for the other to ask what it was, as Lìeyàn was in her ball, so he enlarged the Pokéball and played with it, his movements surprisingly steady despite the alcohol. “A Mawile,” he answered. “She’s very strong,” he continued, his tone almost reverent. Because he battled. Illegally. Maybe he shouldn’t say that.

When the other said his life was wild enough, Ruìsāng burst out laughing. “You?” he asked. “Please. The wildest thing you’ve probably done is decide between soy or almond milk for your latte,” he quipped.

His lips curl up, but it was not really a smile, not a genuine one at least. “A very good offer, but no.” Who knows what a movie night with this person looked like. Mingze definitely had something better to do than watch a movie with this guy.

Whatever pokémon was among them, he had not been aware of it until now. People hardly used pokébals anymore, so the thought didn't even cross his mind. Especially not with the introduction he got. Míngzé couldn’t help feeling a bit uneasy. A strong pokémon and he had no idea where it was. It was quiet enough not to have caught his attention too. “A mawile?” The name did not ring a bell. “Can’t say I know much about that species.” If anything at all. But it was fine, even when the man fell down earlier, the pokémon hadn’t reacted. It was probably docile.

He narrowed his eyes a bit at the— that counted as an insult, right? It definitely was not a compliment. Not with the laughter that came with it. Truth be told, he did not even drink lattes, only black coffee. Míngzé breathed in sharply. “You know me so well, don’t you,” he said, his voice oozing insincerity. The sad part was that even though that particular example was false, it held some form of truth.

No? How surprising,” Ruìsāng sarcastically hummed, when the other turned down his invitation for a movie. The guy didn't strike him as the outgoing type, not the sort to enjoy a night out watching movies with friends. Ruìsāng's alcohol-fueled confidence made him quite the character judge, or so he believed.

The stranger confessed his ignorance about Mawiles, and Ruìsāng's drunken mind provided a straightforward description. “Difficult, feisty,” he stated, his words punctuated by a drunken hiccup.  “Bite hard,” he added after a moment of reflection, a chuckle escaping him as he remembered the pain of his own encounter with Mawile's teeth.

The stranger's remark drew a sly smile from Ruìsāng. “Am I wrong?” he challenged, his tone daring. “Tell me I’m wrong and I’ll eat the words. But I feel like I might not be. I know my people,” he boasted, his words laced with drunken confidence. His ability to handle sticks, among other things, was just an added bonus.

He could not keep his eyes from rolling. After experiencing this whole— thing, he was certain he would not survive a movie night with this man. Míngzé had no reason to figure out if he was right or not. But he did not want to listen to his nonsense all day.

Supposedly the Mawile was difficult and fierce. Not how Míngzé would describe the pokémon, but maybe there was a reason it was very calm. Upon hearing that they bit hard, he couldn’t help but take a step back. It was fine. He had to remind himself. Qiān was there as well. He would immediately intervene if something were to happen. “They sound lovely,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Next to him he could hear Qiān coming closer again after noticing his discomfort.

But apparently this stranger knew him very well. Míngzé furrowed his brow in annoyance. “You are wrong,” he stated matter of fact and he crossed his arms tightly to his chest. He wasn’t, but this stranger did not need to know that. “How can you even be so sure, when you don’t even know my name?” His people. Míngzé clicks his tongue. This whole ordeal should not irritate him as much as it did.

Sarcastically, the stranger commented on Mawiles, to which Ruìsāng simply shrugged, his words slurring slightly as he replied. “A bit of spice has never hurt anyone,” he confessed. “If I wanted my Pokémon to be a lap dog, I’d get a Bulbasaur.” Even in his intoxicated state, Ruìsāng was ready to defend his choice of Pokémon, a testament to the importance of his companions in his life. Though the Mawile hadn’t exactly been a choice. It didn’t matter.

The stranger insisted he was wrong, his tone carrying an undertone of offense that Ruìsāng found amusing. “You don’t have much experience with tequila. You’re out here by yourself. And… you know? Vibes,” he summed up intelligently. It was hard to think very hard about it in his current state of drunkenness, but to him it made a lot of sense.

Míngzé held his hands up. If this person wanted to run around with a Mawile, who was he to judge? He still did not know what those things looked like or anything, only their name and three characteristics. Not much to go by. “Whatever you want,” he said simply, lowering his hands again, taking yet another step back. All this time the man had been all fun and games. Talking about sticks and— other nonsense. Starting a discussion with him while he was drunk was not on his bucket list. Although— a Growlithe would probably be a better lap dog if you’d ask him.

His expression only darkened as the other started summing up what he’d learned about him. There is nothing he can do to deny what he is saying. “That’s what you are basing this on?” While he might not be able to deny any of it, he was also not about to agree. “As far as I’m aware, you’re— nevermind.” Míngzé grits his teeth and once again rubs his eyes. He was not starting a discussion with some drunk person.

Something touched his arm and for a second he pulled away, until he noticed it was Qiān. He softly tugged at his arm, urging him to go. The pokémon was right, there was no reason for him to get worked up over something stupid like this. “Don’t hit your head on the way home,” he said coldly. To think he was worried the other had hurt himself earlier.
