Ruìsāng's nightmare was a repeating memory, a vivid replay of the encounter that had left him battered and broken. In the dream, the monstrous woman's malevolent grin cast a sinister shadow, each of her movements resembling a predatory advance toward defenceless prey.

Abruptly, the nightmare shape-shifted, transforming into a grotesque reflection of his past. His mother's anguished wails interwove with accusing voices that echoed betrayals and failures. A sudden jolt thrust him awake, yet the nightmare lingered like a shadow in his consciousness. The disorienting reality of his mother's continued wailing enveloped him, disorienting him momentarily.

Compelled by an urge to escape the suffocating noise, Ruìsāng navigated the apartment with stealth, avoiding creaking floorboards that could betray his movements. The air inside reeked of despair and he needed to breathe.

Upon reaching the door leading to the rooftop, he stepped into the cool embrace of the night. Silence welcomed him like an old friend.

Seated with closed eyes, he allowed the gentle breeze to sweep over his face. Though the wounds on his chest pulsed with each heartbeat, the nocturnal silence provided solace. The city's distant hum, the subtle rustle of leaves, and the occasional hoot of a Noctowl served as far better companions than the relentless wails of his mother.

His right arm rested on a pulled-up knee, the bandages, stained with dried blood, visible in the faint, silvery glow of the moon. Dressed in an oversized, worn-out sweater that offered warmth but hung loosely on his frame, he was somewhat protected against the cold.

The cold evening air felt crisp and fresh on her face. Mindo wasn't one to enjoy the colder seasons, but after days such as these, she could appreciate the lesser things. It calmed her down somewhat, cooled whatever was boiling over inside her. She was a mess, and she knew it. What loser spends her friday nights alone on a roof, throwing down tequila like it was water? She groaned, unsure why she'd come here again. It was stupid, everything about this place made her anxious now. It wasn't so long ago she'd been beaten to shit here, and yet, she still returned like a dog to it's vomit. It made her angry, frustrated... Sad. This was her spot. She wanted it to feel safe and comforting again.

Sensing her distress, Soot approached her. He put his head on knees, blocking her hands from the bottle she was drowning her sorrows with. She wasn't drunk yet, but her pokémon was clearly trying to stop her from getting to that level. Mindo sighed. "Yeah, yeah," she muttered and ruffled the fur on his dark head, playing with his large ears. They stared into eachother's eyes like that for a while, until the door creaked open.

At least she'd been clever this time. She had placed herself somewhere out of sight of anyone joining her, settled down within the shadows right around the corning. She stiffened, and could feel Soot tense just the same. Some movement, some sounds - clearly someone had joined them. Silently, she got to her feet and threw a glance at the light haired stranger - who turned out not to be much of a stranger at all. Her eyes widened, pupils reduces to small specks. Shit, shit. It really was him. Her heart pounded in her chest, and on instinct she reached within her boot, getting out a small dagger.

Her hand rested on the knife. The iron felt comfortingly cold in her palm. Suddenly, the night did not feel quiet anymore at all - blood surged in her ears as adrenaline started pumping. This was the exact reason it had become a part of her inventory, to make sure that the next time she saw him, or any asshole for that matter, she wouldn't need a big fuck-off pokémon. She just needed to play dirty.

And here was her chance. Even in the pale moonlight she could see the bloodied bandages. He was hurt. And his pokémon was nowhere in sight. She shifted, moving closer.

Something stood in her way, nudging her knee. It surprised her to find it was Soot, who's glistening eyes hid a warning in them. With furrowed brows, she stared back. Was it truly her own pokémon, the one this asshole had threatened to eat that was now trying to stop her? She stared back relentlessly. "Move it," she told him quiet as a whisper. He didn't budge. "Soot," the silence shared between them seemed to last an eternity. After giving up everything for him, he had never questioned her. At times, he would try to nudge her in the right directions, especially in the worse moments of her life - but he had never defied her, like he was doing now. The tension was sharp, but eventually, he was the one who relented, and Mindo stepped forward.

Her feet were nimble and quiet as she approached. She didn't know what she was doing, but at least she was the one making decisions now. Made bold by the touch of liquor on her judgement, she pressed on.

"Need a hand, fucker?" her voice was cold as ice and dripping with a snide bitterness, the humor in her voice just as icy.  Still, she hid the knife she was holding behind her back. Unsure, she stood there, only a meter or two distance shared between them. Who was powerless now? Not her. Not fucking her. She could kill him, she could - he'd regret ever laying hands on her, ever threatening her. She'd show him what she was capable of. Or rather, was she showing herself? Conflict raged inside of her. She could throw him off the building, claim it was a suicide. No-one would ever know. Except for her. Except for her.

Soot brushed against her leg, bringing her back to reality with a shock. Fuck, fuck what was she doing?

The lingering darkness within his chest, manifested in the form of four scars and felt down to the very essence of his being, became less conspicuous in the cold. When cocooned in blankets, concealed from the world, the cold touch of that monstrous encounter still haunted him within those wounds, penetrating his skin, delving into his bones, and chilling his very soul. Yet, in the cold, at least every part of him succumbed to its freezing tendrils. It was an almost welcome sensation, a numbing chill that briefly overshadowed the darkness.

His eyes fluttered open only upon hearing a voice. Glancing over his shoulder, Ruìsāng instantly recognised the girl from their previous encounter. The anger that had once clawed at him after their fight now seemed inconsequential and irrelevant.

Ruìsāng sighed, attempting to recall her words. She had asked if he needed a hand. Raising his right hand into the air in a dismissive wave, he winced at his own movement. “I’m good,” he replied, gently placing his hand back on his knee. His left hand tightly gripped the Pokéball in his pocket, well aware of how he’d stand absolutely no chance against her like this and—

He let go, taking his hand out of his pocket.

Something you want?” he asked. If she intended to provoke a confrontation, he would prefer it at another time.

Looming, she stood there in silence. The whirlwind of emotions raging within her contrasted by the stillbess of the night. Her burning gaze rested on his face, taking in his silhouette. Gently touched by moonlight, he apperared rather... Harmless. His light hair almost seemed luminescent and he just looked worn out. Not fearful, not angry, just tired.

Mindo clenched her fist around the blade, the edge burrowing into her skin until it hurt. All she needed to do was approach him. Infuriatingly, he seemed untouched, not a flicker of fear in those eyes. The cocky fuck wasn't even on edge, he didn't even register her as a threat. Big fucking mistake. She could do whatever she wanted to him now. He had no idea what she really was capable of, and here was her chance to show him. Prove it.

A rough tongue jolted her back to reality. Soot was licking her hands, erasing the thin trail of blood seaping from a shallow cut. Angrily, Mindo sheathed the knife, tucking it into her back pocket. Even after everything, she remained a fucking coward.

"Actually yeah, think it'd do wonders for my mood if you'd jump right off the ledge," she grumbled. Her throat felt dry and raw. She struggled to grasp the reality of what she had contemplated mere moments ago. Arceus, had she really been contemplating to murder him? Her head was spinning and after hesitating for what felt like an eternity, she sat down next to him, maintaing a wary distance. Fishing the bottle of tequila from the pocket of her jacket, she took another swig, cringing at the burn. When she looked into his eyes, hers were still filled with fresh resentment - but they lacked the spark of unpredictability they held just seconds ago. "You really fucked me over last time, dickhead. I should break your ribs in return, you'd deserve it," so why didn't she? Even when given the opportunity of the revenge she'd been craving, why couldn't she?

Ruìsāng had long surpassed the point of exhaustion. A pervasive darkness had taken residence in his chest, a curse tightly wound around his heart like an ominous shadow. Each heartbeat echoed with a sense of cold emptiness, an unsettling knowledge that something was fundamentally wrong with him. Even summoning anger seemed beyond his capacity; the flame of rage had been replaced by an icy chill.

A heavy silence lingered until the girl casually suggested that jumping off the ledge might improve her mood. Ruìsāng hummed thoughtfully, leaning forward slightly to peer down at the city below. He didn’t flinch when she approached, fully aware that she could have pushed him off without hesitation. He didn’t resist; instead, he just waited.

When she sat down, Ruìsāng furrowed his brow, a mix of confusion and weariness. How casual, as if they hadn’t fought on this very rooftop the last time they saw each other. She produced a bottle of tequila, and he averted his gaze, adjusting his position to rest his arm on his knee more comfortably.

She spoke again. Her words prompted a scoff from Ruìsāng, followed by a shake of his head. “You punched me pretty hard too,” he confessed. The aftermath had forced him to cover his face in makeup, a messy solution to evade questions at work. It had been a complication he hadn’t anticipated. Ultimately, it mattered little.

I wouldn’t stop you,” he confessed, his red eyes meeting hers. If she chose to hit him, he would let her. There was nothing he could do about it, especially with his dominant hand torn to pieces.

Pulling up her knees, she put her arms around them. She eyed him angrily from behind them, like a kid would at a disliked babysitter. Instead of protesting, her nameless enemy only peered over the edge, causing her heart to skip a beat. Fucking arceus, something must really be amiss. A feeling of content at his misery succesfully drowned out the sliver of sympathy she was starting to develop.

"Good," her tone was bitter. "I'm a little dissapointed you don't even have a black eye anymore,"she didn't tell him about her bruised ribs that still caused her sleepless nights, not willing to give him that satisfaction. Perhaps if he'd still seem beaten up, that would've stilled her desire for revenge. Because right now, it confused the hell out of her. She wanted to hurt him, make him apologise for the constant state of pain she'd been in, and this place he'd taken from her. But she know it'd only make her feel worse, because the asshole wasn't even fighting back. Mindo clenched her fist, feeling the sting of the small cut in her palm - an uncomfortable reminder of the knife weighing heavy in her pocket.

His sudden gaze locked in hers made her want to flinch. Instead she only narrowed her eyes at him. It was a while before she broke their silence. "If that's some fucked up attempt to gain my sympathy, it's doing quite the opposite," his intentions were difficult to gauge. He seemed sincere, but Mindo found that hard to believe. Still, her hand reached for the bottle again. After putting it to her lips once more, she shoved it his way. "If you're gonna be suicidal at least don't do it sober,"

The girl expressed her disappointment at not seeing Ruìsāng with a black eye. He scoffed. “It’s a little discoloured still if that makes you happy,”  he sighed. In that regard, the aftermath of getting hit in the face was advantageous. At least it healed rapidly. Lately, he hadn’t bothered covering it up, and while it was somewhat hard to discern in the moonlight, the skin wasn’t fully healed yet, displaying an odd yellowish tint over his cheekbone and jaw.

Sympathy?” Ruìsāng echoed, before scoffing and shaking his head. “Nah. There’s no reason to fight lost battles,” he asserted, waving his right hand in the air. The motion made him clench his jaw. “I’m at your mercy,” he continued, a hint of sarcasm in his tone, though the truth lingered in his words.

Ruìsāng glanced down at the bottle pushed in his direction. A part of him yearned to succumb—to be like his mother. Crack open the bottle, let the liquid touch his lips, and drown his sorrows. Wouldn’t it be simple? Perhaps he’d feel a little better. Maybe he’d find someone on Charm and ensure he forgot his troubles for the night.

I came here to avoid the smell of alcohol,” he said, his nose scrunching in disgust as he pushed the bottle back toward her.. “But do enjoy. Your taste is god awful,” he continued, staring at the label of the bottle. Drinking tequila straight from the bottle wasn’t something he could recommend unless one was already terribly drunk.

She strained her neck to see, but the dimmed city lights made it impossible to distinguish. "It does, actually," her tone was dry. With her good hand, she started plucking at the seams of her jacket, a little restless and uneasy in his company. Why was she here?

His sarcasm didn't exactly sit right with her. "Yeah, you are," there was a bitterness in her voice that made her clench her own jaws. He didn't have a clue about what she could have done to him, most likely he would never judge her to be capable of such a thing. A rather annoying voice in the back of her mind whispered that he was right in the end, but Mindo pushed it away.

The bottle sat at his feet. She'd shoved it his way as one would offer something to a dangerous animal, doing whatever it takes to maintain the safe distance between them. Faint noises of glass and liquid, and the bottle bumped into her feet, unopened. His words made her scoff unwillingly, her ego bruised by his rejection. And here she was being high for once. "Oh get off your high horse." she hissed at him with disgust. It was the cheapest liquor the convenience store around the corner had to offer, who cared if it tasted like shit. It got the job done. "Rich of you to judge, life is worthless enough to plunge off of a roof, but not worthless enough to drink cheap liquor? You standards are fucked."

Yeah, you are. Ruìsāng scoffed at her words. A few weeks earlier, he would have picked a fight right then and there, refusing to ever accept any kind of weakness. Feeling powerless was the worst thing one could do to him. Now, there was little he could do but accept it. “Hǎohǎo,” he absentmindedly agreed with her.

Ruìsāng had assumed that mentioning that he had come here to avoid the scent of alcohol would be enough to explain that he wasn't here to drink. Yet, he was immediately told off for being on a high horse. Ruìsāng furrowed his brow as he looked at her, a little confused.

Life is worthless enough to plunge off a roof, but not worthless enough to drink cheap liquor.

Barking out a laugh, red eyes found the bottle again as Ruìsāng considered it. He had always tried so hard not to end up like her—to avoid alcohol in moments where it would leave him sobbing and broken. He wasn't against some drinks for fun, in company, but this…

Did it matter, though? He wouldn’t live long enough to see it become an addiction.

Whatever you want,” he murmured, before bending a little awkwardly to take the bottle in his left hand. He looked at it with a frown for a moment, finally deciding to stick it under his left arm, open it up with his left, and then take it out with his left hand again to take a sip. His nose scrunched at the taste, but the burn was warm—pleasant. A welcome contrast against the cold in his chest. He awkwardly fumbled with the bottle again before pushing it her way once more.

Happy now? What are you out here drinking for anyway?” he sighed.

To her surprise, he barked out a laugh. It rang loudly throughout the night, unwillingly making her jump slightly. She'd expected him to get snappy at her, making her out for an asshole or whatever clever insult he could come up with. Hell, maybe he'd get his fucking rabid pokémon out again and order it to eat her, instead. None of that was true, he simply rolled with the punches. Something in the back of her mind annoyingly told her that in other circumstances, they might've actually gotten along. It was a voice she silenced immediately.

To her surprise, she actually managed to bully him into joining her. Rude, honestly, she was being nice offering him something to suit whatever pain he was in. Still, she was somewhat relieved not to be up here intoxicated whilst his ass was still sober. She'd be forced to stop drinking before he could push her drunk body of the roof anyway, and right now, not drinking sounded even worse than being with him. It would mean dealing with whatever she had just gotten very close to doing, and that was not something she could handle right now. "Ecstatic," she replied dryly. It was his question, though, that caught her off guard. She stared at him for a while, the answer stung sourly on her tongue.

you

Yet the nauseating fall from the roof was far more appealing than admitting to such a spineless thing. Their encounter had been the catalyst for a newfound crisis she'd fallen into, but she would not afford him the luxury of knowing that. Instead she looked away and scoffed. "Can't a girl enjoy some shitty liquor on a roof?" sarcasm dripped from her words. "Why do you care anyway?"

Tension lingered between them, and Ruìsāng couldn't fathom why she was here. Was it an attempt to prove she wasn't afraid? If so, she needed to grasp that there was no reason for fear; even if he wished to harm her, he lacked the ability. His hand was ruined, his chest a constant source of pain with every movement. Drained of energy, the prospect of collapsing before a fight initiated seemed more plausible than victory.

When he questioned her reason for being there, she scoffed, retorting with a dismissive remark. Following that, she asked why he cared. “I don’t,” he asserted bluntly. It would be a mistake to think he cared about anyone but himself.

You do know that you punched me first, right?” he asked, lifting a brow as he rolled his shoulder, attempting to alleviate the persistent ache that had settled within his body.

The tension between them was almost tangible. Daring a glance sidewards, she saw some of her own questions reflected in his eyes. Why was she here? Mindo gritted her teeth until it hurt, repeating that same question over and over in her head, mulling on it. Oh he shouldn't get her wrong, she still despised his guts. But he wasn't fighting back, and that annoyed the hell out of her. Mostly because something buried deep inside her recognized that they were awfully similar, and most likely stuck on this stupid roof for reasons not all that different. Mindo broke their eye contact, bothered by her own thoughts she reached for the bottle again and threw down another few swigs until it made her cough out. The pain in her rib cage it caused made her cringe visibly.

At his reply, she scoffed. "Well, glad we established that," it was his next question, that made her jolt up slightly. That prick. "I don't think you're in much of a position to pitch another fight," she growled, clenching and releasing her fist repeatedly. Soot moved closer and settled under her hand, staring intently at the stranger. "You don't fuck with my dog," she stated.

Ruìsāng watched with thinly veiled irritation as the girl coughed, struggling with her drink. If she couldn’t handle a simple drink, why was she even here, he wondered. So, he asked, more to himself than to her. His question, unintended as genuine concern, seemed to give her the wrong impression.

He observed as the other spoke up, firmly telling him not to provoke her dog. His gaze drifted to the creature, an eyebrow arching slightly in response to her protective stance. The girl's overreaction was puzzling to him.

You were the one who intervened, not knowing my Mawile was under control, which was a blatantly stupid thing to do,” he said, his voice laced with a mix of frustration and disbelief. “You misunderstood the situation. Had I not been in control, there was nothing you could have done.” His eyes met hers as his gaze narrowed. “Your Pokémon was never in any danger. You could have been.” Why was it so hard for her to understand?

His glare shifted from Mindo to the houndour at her feet. The attention dragged out a deep growl that she could feel vibrate through his entire body. She could tell what he saw, he made no effort to hide it. A puny, useless pokémon. No power, no danger - undoubtedly what he thought of her too. They could scorch his face off, give him the final push of this roof that he was so begging for. And yet, she didn't.

Anger gnawed at her like a hunger, causing her to bite down on the inside of her lip hard. "You really want to do this again, fucker?" She stared daggers at him."Your pokémon attacked without warning, in what world does that sound like he's not in danger?"  His haughtiness did nothing to ease her anger. "You tell your rabid pokémon to eat my dog, I'll make you eat shit," Mindo conveniently ignored that she, in fact, had been the one to eat shit. With a frustrated groan she fell backwards, resting her head on the slightly damp roof and her eyes on the stars. Good thing the alcohol did something to sooth her anger, as he certainly didn't. Unknowingly to her, the sheathed knife was now visibly poking out of her backpocket ever so slightly. "Look, you want to plunge off this roof? Do it yourself. Don't be a coward and try to get me to do it for you," He wouldn't. Right? Right..?

The girl’s temper flared anew, and she jabbed at him. When she continued, asking in what world it sounded like her Pokémon was not in danger, Ruìsāng rolled his eyes, a wave of exasperation washing over him. He let out a derisive scoff, his lips curling slightly as she threatened to ‘make him eat shit’ if or when he sicced his rabid Pokémon on her dog. He mulled over her words, teetering on the edge of a retort, when she barreled on.

A fall? Nah, that makes such a bloody mess,” he remarked, his voice tinged with a hint of dark amusement. He leaned back, his gaze drifting skyward, not in anger, but in weariness.

Look, if your Pokémon was really in any danger, it’d be a goner by now. Sue me for trying to stop you from throwing yourself at a Pokémon that’s way out of your league,” he said, his tone a mix of frustration and reason. “Believe me, if I didn’t have Mawile under tight reins, your Houndour, and you, would be in tatters. Can’t fathom why that’s so hard for you to grasp.

All that his words elicited from her was a dragged out groan. She considered getting up and giving him another black eye to match the other, but ultimately decided against it. Because she was tired, and he wasn't worth the hassle. Definitely not because he scared her. Mindo dragged her hands over her face, sighing deeply."Har har har, you're such a savior," her words dripped with a passionate despise, looking sideways to meet his gaze. He was wrong. So fucking wrong. She hated the air of superiority he carried, as if he was on top of everything. Clearly, that wasn't the case, as someone completely in control of their life likely wouldn't spend his evening sulking on a roof. "Congrats! I think you might be the most infuriating person in Sanctum city,"

She sat up a little. "Look I'm here to get drunk and feel sorry for myself, not to start another bitch fight that you're not gonna win. Just let me have that, will you?" at least the first part was getting along nicely. The city lights were growing blurrier and blurrier, and that familiar buzz eased some of her worries. Definitely not all of them. "Why are you here anyway?"

Ruìsāng's eyes rolled skyward in a fluid, exaggerated arc, a silent rebuttal to her sarcastic declaration of him as a 'saviour'. Her words were laced with irony, before deeming him the most infuriating person in Sanctum City. A half-amused, half-irritated scoff escaped his lips. He knew all too well he was far from being that - that honour belonged to others more deserving. Yet, he sensed arguing the point would be futile. He opened his mouth to dismiss the whole conversation, but she cut in before he could get the words out.

She declared, with a mix of bitterness and resignation, that her only agenda was to drown in alcohol and self-pity, not to engage in a skirmish with him. Her question about his presence there hung in the air. Despite it being laced with a mutual disinterest in each other's motivations, Ruìsāng's inherent tendency to provoke couldn’t be stifled.

I was avoiding someone who got drunk and felt sorry for themselves,” he retorted. “Surprisingly, even you are an improvement over her,” he added, his words underscored with a scoff.

What a weird fucking situation she'd found herself in. How come that out of all people, it was this fucker she'd have to run into? Couldn't it have been Míngzé? Or even that dipshit Robert? His presence confused her even further and did nothing to quell the crisis she'd found herself in in the past few days.

As she lay on her back and stared out at the night sky, the few stars that peaked out through the clouds were starting to spin slightly The only upside to being a lanky, small fuck was that she didn't need to spend all her income on drinks in order to get drunk. Not to deny that she still did, though. "Pah! You out of anyone should know better than to underestimate my ability to be a pain in the fucking ass," she snickered, the alcohol taking effect "Or face, in your case," She added with a self-satisfied grin. "That the bitch who fucked up your hand?" she probed once again, despite feeling very little pityf for him or his situation. Still, she was desperate to fill the empty space between them with words. As any silence would allow her mind to wonder, and she wasn't too happy to think any more about this situation, or the knife in her pocket, for that matter.

Ruìsāng couldn't help but arch an eyebrow in mild amusement. For someone who didn’t want to talk to him, her words flowed freely. Her self-description as a 'pain in the ass' was met with a hint of irony in his expression. When she suggested it was his face that was the problem, he couldn't resist scrunching his nose in mock offence. “You were,” he retorted under his breath.

Her query about whether the 'bitch' was responsible for his injured hand drew from him a scoff, laced with a trace of humour at the absurdity of the situation. “No, it was actually a granny from down the street,” he replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm. As if their elderly neighbour hadn’t suddenly morphed into a monstrous figure with claws. “You’d better watch out. She’s surprisingly strong,” he added.

Her nameless enemy replied under his breath, but it certainly had not gone unnoticed. "Still am. Always will be," the hint of pride in her snickering voice was perhaps undeserved , but Mindo did not particularly care, losing her filter more and more as time went on. If the only thing within her capabilities was to drive someone up the fucking wall, so be it. However pathetic, at least that was still some form of power she could hold over someone. Arceus, she truly was a sad sack of shit.

Almost, she found some relief in his words, this absurd situation and this even absurder conversation at the very least offering her a distraction. Perhaps even more remarkably, she found herself chuckling at his response. "Heh, you mean the senile woman on the first floor who always burns whatever the fuck she's baking?" Mindo wasn't one to complain about the warmth or beauty of fire, but she wasn't exactly thrilled about that granny burning down their building. When she's just moved in, she'd made the mistake of accepting her customary welcoming gift of brownies, wrongfully thinking she'd just scored some free baked goods. Arceus, they were awful. Might as well inhale some coal. There was a reason she warned poor Ming against eating them.

Not realizing the stranger was talking about another granny entirely, she came to a dire realization. "Arceus, you fucking live in this building, don't you?"
