The numbness didn’t pass as she headed over to the building, barely registering that she had arrived in front of the closed door. Her mind was in turmoil, enough that she would go to the one place she had been able to feel safe up to now, even after everything that had happened. She didn’t even register that she had pulled out her phone and sent a message to the one person who might just be her worst choice right now.

Ming, help. I am downstairs.

Would he even come? Maybe it was better if he didn’t come, not while she was in this state. But where else would she go right now? She leaned against the wall, trying to keep upright. She tried to focus on the physical pain, one slip and she might just keep spiralling down, the fear and despair taking over. It took all of her strength to just keep standing there, waiting for anything from Ming.

HYPOCRITE OF DARKNESS
SHOWS ITS FACE, LIKE A NIGHTMARE, AGAIN, THIS REPETITIVE PATTERN

It had been a strange couple of days. Days wherein he was not sure what to do. The Artifact he’d received only a few days ago, was hidden as safely as possible. Not that it did much to ease him. Questions tormented him, too many to keep track of. All of them had to do with that artifact.

Míngzé had been listening to an audiobook as a distraction. He laid down on his couch, Dai sleeping at his feet and the Ninetales on the ground. As always, Wěi was hiding somewhere, presumably on his bed. Most of the story went over his head, but still he tried his utmost to listen. The voice of the storyteller however was interrupted by the voice of his phone. Telling him he had a message from Lucina, one that put a frown on his face.

He moved until he was in a sitting position, worry clouding his mind. Help. It was that one simple word that caused him to reply immediately whilst standing up and making his way downstairs on his slippers.

On my way. Is everything alright?

Dai was following him closely. By now Míngzé knew his way around the apartment complex well enough to not need his cane. Soon he was downstairs, the chilling breeze from outside sending goosebumps to his arms. “Lucina?” he asked as he looked around, trying to discern her figure. The houndour at his side looked around too, although he had no idea what the problem was.

Her phone buzzed indicating that she had a message and yet she was almost afraid to look at it. What would she do if he wasn't home or that he couldn't help? What then? She could feel herself start to panic as she opened the message only for a strange sense of relief to wash over her as she read the message. She just sent one word in reply, not knowing what else to put there.

No

Everything was not alright, but she didn't think of explaining more at this point. It was already hard enough to just keep standing even with the support of the wall behind her. Her own mind was trying to drag her under, to drag her into a vicious cycle that couldn't end well, so she tried to cling onto the few things that could keep her grounded at the moment. She only noticed that she had zoned out again when her name was called by a familiar voice. She looked up, her eyes finding Ming and Dai, the Houndour had come down with him. ”Ming” His name was almost a whisper, her voice sounding broken even to her own ears, a result of the pain and the inner turmoil currently happening. Just that one word sent a pain so intense through her jaw that she groaned in pain. The swelling had gotten worse, making her almost unable to move her jaw at this point. She tried to take one step towards him, but stumbled, her hand trying to find support to keep standing.

As Míngzé descended the stairs, another message reached his phone. This time it was a simple no, which only fueled his worry. No matter how they parted last time, he still cared for her. That had not changed even when certain feelings between them were far different.

A voice sounded, barely a whisper but he recognized it immediately. The light provided by the sun helped him see her silhouette. Míngzé took a few steps towards her, hand extended. “What happened?” She stumbled forward, nearly collapsing forward. Dai barked as she did. Míngzé reached out, taking a few steps forward in an attempt to catch her and break her fall before she would hit the ground.

“Easy, easy, don’t push yourself,” he said alamered. No matter how futile it was, he was looking for something, anything that could tell him more about her condition. Míngzé hadn’t heard from her in a while after she had told him she needed space. With a deep furrow he looked towards her. Has something happened to her? Just how wounded was she? More and more questions raised to the surface.

She had thought that she might need to try and find the wall again to keep standing, but it was Ming who took a step forward, so she was able to grab one of his arms to keep standing. Blood would definitely get on his clothes there, either her own or that guy’s but muttering an apology here would hurt too much. She tried to wrap her head around how she was going to tell Ming what had happened, but it was too much to explain with just texting, so she could only think of sending the most important thing.

I think he broke my jaw

There were more wounds, the scrapes on her knees and on her forehead and the mental ones that the guy’s last words had inflicted. The fear and despair still hadn’t disappeared, simmering beneath the surface, waiting for the moment she let her guard down. She just hoped that this was enough for Ming to know what to do, because at the moment she had no idea what to do with herself or how to fix this.

Her hands grabbed hold of his clothes, which he preferred to having to pick her up form the ground. It were moments like these that reminded him just how short she was compared to him. With no effort at all, Míngzé supported her weight. “Sit, before you fall.” It was not a request. Already he was helping her by guiding her to the ground if she allowed him to.

One of his questions got answered. Míngzé clenched his jaw, his eyes widening. “Someone broke your jaw?” he said, flabbergasted. That did explain why she did not talk. A broken jaw… His own phone was already in his hand, ready to call the emergency services.

A hand was still resting on her shoulder. “Who the— how? What happened?” Míngzé assumed breaking a jaw was not an easy task. Something really bad must have happened. But why would anyone simply hurt her? He couldn't resist quickly scanning his surroundings, trying to see if anyone might still be lingering nearby. Which did not seem to be the case. If there was, Dai would probably warn them anyway.

She let Ming lead her to sit on the ground, not struggling at all, despite knowing that she didn’t want to stay here, not this close to the place where it had happened, a constant reminder of how hard she had failed.

Can you take me inside?

For once she was glad for having a phone, but it was a struggle at the same time. She wasn’t the fastest with writing her messages, seeing as how she hadn’t used it that often yet, which meant that Ming would have to be patient. Even as he started to ask her questions she tried to wrap her head around them, to be able to formulate an answer for him. Ming knew that guy or had his number at least.

The one that sent those messages when we first met.
He stole something.

There was just no starting how to explain what he had stolen, Ming would most likely not understand and she didn’t know if she wanted to drag him into this, though this might be too much already. There was no explaining right now what she had gone through to get it and to then have it stolen.

Míngzé released a breath when she sat down on the ground. All he knew so far was that her jaw was broken, but there was no saying what other injuries she had. Doubt painted his face as she asked to be taken inside. “Do you think you can make it? You nearly collapsed as it is.” He could get her inside the lobby if she felt comfortable walking, but he doubted she would be able to go up the stairs.

Her texts took a while, but he waited patiently for each and every one of them. Even though he wanted nothing more than to call an ambulance and grab some ice. “Sāng?” he questioned, his tone filled with shock as he shook his head in disbelief. “You sure it was him? This— it makes no sense. What did he steal?” They did not part on good terms, that was true, but that was no reason for him to lash out like this. Not without a reason.

Míngzé sat there in a state of confusion, but he shook his head. “I’ll go and grab some ice, and I’m going to call for help.” Right now her safety was more important than what Sāng might have done to her.

She just wanted to get away from here, so she would only have the option to try and walk. So she just nodded and tried to push herself to her feet, even if Ming would protest. It was better than sitting here on the same street where everything had happened. It was clear that Ming knew who she was talking about, even giving her a name now. But she could tell he didn’t believe her words, the twinge of hurt that came with that realisation only added to everything.

I’m sure, he knew about what happened.

She wasn’t going to say it for everyone to hear, Ming would understand. She knew Ming would ask what he had stolen, he was trying to make sense of this all, but how was she going to explain what it had meant to her, what that one piece had been for her? She didn’t know where to start, she could really only think of one thing to say:

Something that I risked my life multiple times for.

It was too complicated to explain more, she didn’t even have proof now and she doubted Ming would be able to understand, it would just take too long to explain at this point. Ming mentioned calling for help, but she had no idea what he meant with that. Who was he planning on calling? He didn’t mean doctors right? Panic settled in as she tried to grab his arm, stopping him from leaving. She did need the ice, she knew that much, but she didn’t need to see any doctors. She just didn’t trust them.

Even after his warning, she still decided to stand up again. This is where he could force her down again, telling her that it was unwise, but he didn’t. “Be careful, alright?” Míngzé once more warned her while helping her. The agony she must be in was something hard to imagine. In a way it reminded him of himself. Even with an arrow puncturing his abdomen, he kept going. Just like she did now.

To hear that Sāng stole something from her was even harder to imagine. It did not sound like anything he would do, at least not without a very good reason. Last time he’d been close to stealing something from him too, but that had been different. Míngzé understood why he would try to get his hands on that.

Once Lucina was on her feet, Míngzé would offer her his support to bring her inside the lobby. There she could wait. Yet as they walked, he suddenly halted as the phone spoke once more. Míngzé’s breath caught in his throat. Surely it can’t be… no that was impossible. “Your life? What could possibly be worth your life?” Míngzé took a step forward again, using his key to open the door before guiding her inside.

WHen she grabbed his arm, Míngzé raised an eyebrow. “Something wrong? Are you hurt anywhere else?”

If she hadn’t experienced pain before this, pain that had been even greater, then she might have been screaming. Though screaming would have only hurt her more. She carefully followed him, making sure to keep standing, to focus on him and nothing else. That was until he suddenly stopped, asking her what could be worth her life. The answer was very simple, it was worth it to find answers about herself. So while they were standing still she took the opportunity to write another message:

Answers about myself

She didn’t expect Ming to understand, he had never experienced what it was like to lose your memories, to not know who you were. It made you clasp onto anything that might be a lead and now she had lost it. Yes, she knew where it was, but there was no way that she would be able to take it back at this point in time, she would have to be prepared for that and there were three more parts. She had grabbed his arm, trying to stop him from calling anything like doctors, afraid what they might do with her. She didn’t trust them to just treat her injuries.

No doctors

It was a clear request, though she had no idea if he would comply with it. She wouldn’t have the strength to stop him anyway and she wouldn’t be able to run away this time either. That was what made her panic, this was a prime opportunity for anyone to try something on her and she knew just how vulnerable she was.

A soft sigh rolled over his lips. Of course that was what she had been after, yet nothing tangible that could be stolen. Even if it was, still nothing that would be worth much to Sāng. Míngzé’s mind was racing to try to figure out what it was exactly. He could always ask his friend — if he could still call him that — later. The question was if he would answer. “Nothing is worth your life,” Míngzé said instead, shaking his head. “Answers will mean nothing if you drop dead the next second.” Survival is what it was all about.

It was exactly why Lucina needed to see a doctor. Medical attention was needed if she was to recover from this. With her unique look and experiences he understood why she would not want any doctors around her, but there was simply no other choice. Míngzé placed his other hand above hers, gently squeezing it. “And then what? You would rather walk around with a broken jaw? One that might never heal or even get worse if you do nothing?” Míngzé’s voice had an edge to it as he spoke. Last time she ran when he wanted to call the cops, but now that was not an option.

He did not let go of her hand. “You need a doctor, there is no way around it.” Determination shone bright in his eyes as he gazed towards her. He would not let her ruin her own life just because she was afraid. “It is alright to be afraid, but those people exist to help. You will be fine.”

He didn't understand, saying that nothing was worth her life. Yes, she would have been dead if she hadn't had that item from the festival or the deity that had been protecting her. She knew Sang had been right about that and that was why it hit so hard. It reminded her of the moment she had tried to worship something else, how empty she had felt in that moment and only that item had saved her back then. She would have definitely died without it, no questions there. But it was still all worth it if it was only to get answers and now the only thing that had felt like a lead was gone. Taken from her. So no, he didn't understand that was clear and that was why she didn't even try to spend more energy on explaining it to him.

She didn't know what she wanted to do about her current situation, just that she didn't want the normal doctors, people who might try to do something to her. She did understand that this was bad, just the fact that the smallest movement hurt told her that.

I don't trust normal doctors

But she herself didn't know anyone that might be able to help her and she doubted that Ming did either. She just hoped that he would listen and help think of other options.

Did his words have any effect on her? That was hard to say. Míngzé waited for some form of reply, but none came. This search of hers, her goal of finding answers was important to her. A soft sigh rolled over his lips, and he too decided to say nothing about it for now. There were more pressing matters anyway.

Slight frustration was building up inside his chest as she told him she did not trust doctors. Míngzé let go of her hand, taking a step back if she’d let him. “Then what would you have me do? I can’t heal a broken jaw. No one can, only a doctor.” There was a hint of that frustration shiny through in his voice.

There was one person he knew of, but he was out of the question for numerous reasons. Bringing her to the hospital might cause a lot of other problems, but it was necessary. “If you keep it like this, there is a chance it will only get worse.” All Míngzé wanted was for her to realize that with this, she did not really have another option.

It wasn't that she didn't realise that this was serious, she just didn't trust doctors at all. If she wasn't careful they would want to examine her for more than just her jaw or the other wounds and she couldn't trust the doctors to not do anything, but Ming seemed very adamant on her going to see a doctor, because there was a chance of it not healing properly. It was something that she knew, but that didn't do anything to lessen the fear. As Ming took his hand from hers and took a step away, she wanted to grab him again, but didn't. Inwardly she sighed, it seemed like she would have no other choice.

Fine, but you have to stay with me, prevent them from doing anything that they shouldn't

That was the only reason why she would go, because she trusted him and she was tired. She had barely enough energy left to start a fight with Ming over this now. She just hoped that he wouldn't betray that trust she put in him, if he did then this might just go completely wrong.

A breath of relief escaped from his lips, making way for a smile. Finally she seems to realize that there was no other option left for her than to go to the hospital. They would need to make scans of her jaw to see the severity of it all, then they would determine what to do next. Míngzé was glad she would seek out the help she desperately needed right now.

“But of course, I was planning on coming with you anyway.” Not that there was much he could do, but it was better than letting her go alone. The experience itself would be new, and given everything he would not let her go alone anyway.

There was a small smile on his face. “Wait here, I’m going to get some ice and make a call, I’ll be right back.” WIth those words Míngzé turned to leave. It would be much quicker to go upstairs alone, grab some ice from the fridge and call for an ambulance while he was at it. It might be stupid, but taking the bus would take too long and it was not like he could drive her to the hospital.

She knew all too well that this could end badly either way, but she had a small hope that Ming would be able to prevent anything from happening. Even though she was still doubting the doctors themselves. She would be something interesting to them, something they might even want to examine because of how she looked and she just hated the thought of them staring, discussing her, maybe even touching her inappropriately. Yeah, this was not going to be a good experience, she knew that much.

Ming told her that he would get some ice and make a call, leaving her behind with his Houndour. Dai was clearly keeping an eye on her for Ming and she knew that Ming would know the moment she tried to escape. It was tempting to do so, but if she failed and this Houndour was going to warn Ming, then he might just leave her alone with those doctors. It was better that that wasn’t going to happen, so she decided to stay put, mentally preparing herself for what was to come. Ming could never completely understand why she felt like this, he was just like the others despite his eyes, it wasn’t the same for her.

During his call, he did not give too much information, only that he had a friend who badly hurt her jaw, probably broke it and that’s it. Together with an address it was enough for them to make haste towards their location. Soon Míngzé is going downstairs again, an ice pack wrapped up in a towel in his hand. He took the chance to take his cane with him, for when he would join her in the ambulance.

There was a voice in the back of his mind which told him Lucina might be gone as soon as he came back. It would not be the first time she ran. When he noticed she was still there, a smile broke through. “Here, this should help a bit.” Míngzé handed over the ice pack. “They will arrive in a few minutes.” Hopefully it would not take them too long,

“I still don’t understand why he would do that to you.” Míngzé shook head. An idea was simmering in his mind, but it felt highly unlikely. He simply hoped she would tell him more before the ambulance would arrive.

She couldn’t deny that she got nervous the moment she saw Ming coming back. It meant that he had really called them and that it most likely wouldn’t take long before they were here. She took the ice pack from him, holding it against her jaw. The ice made her jaw a bit numb, lessening the pain only a little, but she hoped it would at least help against the swelling. She would only have a few minutes before they were here and she was already regretting her decision of agreeing to this.

She wasn’t surprised when Ming started about the fact that he had no idea why Sang would do something like this. But how did he expect her to explain it when the story wasn’t just a short one? She grabbed her phone, putting it down on her leg, so that she was able to type with one hand while the other was holding the ice to her jaw.

It’s too long of a story to explain.
It was an item I found in the mountains after going through several trials.

That was as much as she would be able to tell him in the time they had. If he really wanted the details, it would have to wait. Unless she would be able to escape the doctors by telling him about it, then she would definitely give him all the details, but that wasn’t likely at the moment.

The ice would do nothing to lessen the injury, but hopefully it was enough to take some of the pain away. Míngzé was still worried for her yet was glad that she seemed to be fine otherwise. Things could’ve gone much worse. All they could do right now was wait.

As they did, Míngzé couldn’t help but think back on what she’d told him. He wanted more questions, if only to confirm his own suspensions. Desperately he hoped for it not to be true. That would make everything much easier. That hope left him when she typed her next message.

Míngzé clenched his jaw, trying to remain a neutral expression. The hint of shock in his eyes was unavoidable. “You went to the mountains,” Míngzé repeated. She had told him she would after their visit to the Fortune Teller. His mind wandered off to the artifact he had hidden away in his home. “What kind of item did you find?” Míngzé felt his heart hammering in his chest, trying to break free. If she had found something similar— he couldn’t help but feel that would be a bad thing.
