She watched him, holding the ice to her jaw. She didn’t understand why he wanted to know what the reason was that Sang had hit her. She wasn’t planning on telling him that she hurt him too, Sang had started it with his Mawile after all. There might be a point when Ming might find out, but that was something she could be worried about later.

She had typed her message, it was being replayed from his phone and as she watched him, she could tell that he was shocked even if he tried to hide it. Sang had seemed to know about the artefact and somehow the pieces were starting to fall together. Ming knew about the other piece too, but whether Sang or Ming was the one who had it or someone entirely else, she couldn’t tell. Of course he wanted to know what she had found exactly, she sighed, despite it hurting to do so.

You already know, don’t you?

It was a question to try and confirm that he did indeed know of another piece of the artefact and maybe to gauge whether he was on Sang’s side with this. She wouldn’t know what to do if that was the case.

This was exactly what he wanted to avoid. A deep frown came on his forehead and he slightly shook his head in confusion. He did not want her to know that he was aware of whatever was going on in the world. It was best if she didn’t, which meant he had to lie to her.

“What?” The word rolled off his lips swiftly, his voice layered with faked confusion. “What should I know?” It felt wrong to lie to her, yet here he was. He kept things from people for years, and he could only hope that would help him in this situation. The less people knew about this whole thing, the better. If she had indeed discovered the same item as he had, it made him wonder if she had also received the same assistance.

“If you think Sāng has already told me, he hasn’t. We are not exactly on good terms right now. You are the first one to speak to me about this.” The words easily left his mouth. Perhaps too easy. They were not a lie however.

The pieces were falling into place, she just missed a few of them. She didn’t know who had the second piece, but it was clear that someone had gotten it and that both Sang and Ming seemed to be aware of it. She had seen the shock in Ming’s eyes, the moment when he had realised what she had meant. So when he lied, it was better that he couldn’t see her expression at that moment, because it was one of pure hurt, but she kept quiet. It seemed like he wasn’t going to confide in her with this and if she was honest she had hoped she had been wrong, that he wouldn’t be involved in all this, but it seemed too late now.

For once she was glad that she couldn’t speak, her voice might betray too much in this case. She didn’t know what to think about his next words, though she doubted that Sang would have told him anything. It had been too short of a time period for that to be possible and if he had received any messages while with her she would have known.

Just forget about it then. It’s better for you.

It was better like this, then she could try to pretend that things were still fine, that there wasn’t something huge hanging between them. Something which neither of them wanted to speak about. She stiffened when she heard voices outside, clearly indicating that some people had arrived. She knew what was coming next and she couldn’t help but be afraid of how this would go.

The words spoken by the fortune teller echoed in his own mind. She had talked about people walking the dark path around him. Then there had been the clear anger radiating from the spirits as he left the tent to join Lucina. What if they meant Lucina? In a way, it made perfect sense. Yet back then he had been blind to it.

Míngzé hoped she would believe him, but it was hard to say. The voice of her phone revealed nothing, neither would her expression. A silent sigh escaped from his lips. All he could do was pray that she did in fact believe him. Lucina was done talking about this, but he wasn’t. “Why would that be?” It was too late for that anyway, he was in it already with no easy way out.

The sirens that had first been distant, now sounded close by and it did not take long before they were right at the door. “Let me help you get outside,” Míngzé said, extending his hand. He would support her until they were outside, and then they could take over. Then he would join them towards the hospital.

She had hoped that he would stop prying now, because it was just rude that he dared to keep asking while he didn’t give anything himself in return. So she didn’t feel like answering him when he asked why it was better if he didn’t know, if he just forgot about it. She knew she wasn’t going to tell him now, even if he wanted to.

Just forget it.

She told him, not wanting to have this discussion right now, not when she was afraid of what was to happen next. Her trust in Ming was waning that much was sure, but she needed him to do what she had asked of him, to make sure that she would be able to get out after all this. She wouldn’t forgive him if he left her there. She took his hand, letting him help her to the ambulance. She knew her movements were stiff, her whole body tense. She saw the ambulance personnel, the surprise on their faces was something they couldn’t hide and an uneasy feeling settled in her stomach. She entered the ambulance, albeit a bit unwillingly and let them take a look at her while they drove to the hospital.

Once inside the hospital she was put on one of the beds, a nurse telling her that a doctor would be there shortly. She had seen the stare of the people here and knew that they were aware that she was different. She sat on the edge of the bed, her hands tightly wrapped around the edge, claws digging into the bed. She really wanted to get out of here.

Even if she had been willing to talk before, she no longer wanted to do so now. Míngzé gave her a short nod. “Alright.” Trying to pry answers from her would not work. All he could do was wait and hope that she would reveal more to him. For now it had to wait. Help has arrived, which was their first priority.

As they traveled towards the hospital, Míngzé stayed at her side for as long as he was allowed to. He did not say much and only listened to what the doctors and nurses had to say about her condition. That was when his mind was not drifting off.

If she had indeed found something similar, he understood why Sāng had taken it away from her. For that reason, he also could not be angry at him. While they had a fallout a few days ago, he still trusted the man. Far more than he trusted Lucina. Too much about her was unknown. He did wonder how exactly she acquired hers, and how many similar objects there were. What would she even want to do with it and why had she been carrying it around?

Those questions were haunting his mind and he was desperately trying to come up with answers to all of them while he waited. At some point Míngzé had his phone in his hand, thinking about sending Sāng a text anyway. Yet he was not sure if it was a good idea. As long as Sāng had it, it was in safe hands. Yet this meant his previous efforts to keep both Sāng and Vince away from that thing had ultimately been in vain.

She kept quiet as they waited for the doctor, determined to not start the same conversation with Ming again now. It felt like hours before a doctor finally came to her bed, taking one look at her and clearly raising a brow as he took in her appearance. The claws, the ears and lastly the wounds. She tensed even more if that was possible, just willing the doctor to look the other way and only treat her. Somehow the doctor saw her looking at him and shook his head, apologising for his rudeness and told her to relax a bit, which was impossible really.

The doctor examined her and it felt really uncomfortable, but she let him do it, doing what he asked, which also meant trying to move her jaw, which was very painful. The doctor did indeed suspect her jaw to be broken, so he sent her for some photos. This was even worse, she had never seen any of these machines before and they expected her to keep standing really still, otherwise the photo would be ruined.

After the photos were taken, they were taken to another room, one where she would be able to receive treatment she had been told. That was when she started to panic, wondering if they just wanted to lock her up in there, but Ming was still with her, so hopefully that wasn’t the case. The doctor from before followed them inside, told her that her jaw was indeed broken, her lower jaw at that, but that it was a simple break and that she wouldn’t need surgery at least. That was good, because she would have never agreed with that.

But now came the part where the doctor would be explaining how they were going to treat her. Her other smaller wounds would have to be attended to too, but that was just a question of cleaning them and then bandaging them. Her jaw was the bigger problem and there were several options according to the doctor. Most of the options were for inside her mouth and would be better at keeping her jaw in place, but they would definitely require her to come back here, something she didn’t want. There was one other option, one that would have a chin cup and bands around her head to keep it in place. It was something that she would be able to do herself and they wouldn’t know if she didn’t return.

That really sounded like the best option, though there were a lot of other things that she would have to change too. The doctor wanted to prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to make sure that no infection would happen. She was wary about taking them, worried that they would try to drug her with them, but the doctor only gave her a prescription and she would have to pick them up herself. She had no idea how that worked, but she hoped that Ming did.

Finally the doctor mentioned that chewing would most likely not be easy, at least for the first week and that she would most likely have to eat liquid food. As long as it was food she doubted she would really mind. She had sometimes gone a day without after all or only eaten very little. It did mean she would need a blender, the doctor mentioned that that could just turn the food into liquid if she were to add a bit of liquid.

The doctor was telling her some more things for follow-ups, but she didn’t listen at this point, she wasn’t planning to return and that wouldn’t change. She had already gone here once and that had been too much. She couldn’t help but be tense the whole time. When the doctor had finished speaking and helped treat her, she tugged on Ming’s sleeve, indicating that they should leave, before someone tried to stop her. She didn’t want to stay here one minute longer than necessary.

As this was not an emergency, it all still took a while. Too long in fact. With this new found information, he did not want to stay here. There were questions that needed answers, but he would not find them here. Míngzé waited, his legs crossed and his foot tapping the air. Sometimes he picked up parts of the conversation, but he was mostly too distracted. At some point he found himself with a cup of coffee in his hands, which made the waiting less terrible.

Míngzé was pulled out of his thoughts as he felt a soft pulling at his sleeve. After blinking a few times and taking a deep breath, he came back to the land of the living. “Is it done?” Already he straightened his back, ready to stand up.

“I assume you want to go home now?” Míngzé asked as he grabbed his cane. It was his spare one and not foldable so it had been standing behind him against the wall. Next he stood up and offered his hand. He would call her a cab and pay for it if necessary.

She knew it had taken quite some time, her whole body was tired, telling her that she had been tense for too long after the confrontation with Sang. She did want to go home and just curl up on her bed and just sleep everything away if possible. Though she knew it wouldn’t be that simple. Ming asked her if she was done and she grabbed her phone. The pain may have lessened a little, but talking was still going to hurt too much.

Yes, just need to get some medicine.

Though she had no idea where she needed to go. The doctor had mentioned an apothecary inside the hospital itself, but she had no idea how that worked, she just hoped that Ming would know. Of course she wanted to go home as soon as possible, but she also knew that there was something hanging in the air between them, she wasn’t that oblivious. She hesitated, knowing that he had most likely lied to her, so she didn’t owe him anything. Yet he had gone with her to this place and made sure that she would be able to leave. She still hoped that she would never have to return here though.

Yes I do.
You know, I was planning on showing it to you, but I hesitated and then this happened.

She didn’t know how he would react to this. It had been the truth, though she had been hesitating it had been the reason why she had had it with her at that point in time and at that place. It was the least she could tell him about at this point though.

With this whole visit to the hospital it had been a long day. Míngzé wanted nothing more than to go home and decide upon his next course of action. “Right, lead the way,” he said with a nod after hearing that she needed to pick up her medicine. The interior of the hospital was fairly unfamiliar to him, meaning once more she had to be his eyes.

Not knowing what to say, Míngzé remained quiet. It had been easier when the doctor had been present, but now that they were alone, the silence weighed heavily in the air. He wanted to ask her how she felt, how her jaw was. Normal questions. He kept them to himself however as he noticed Lucina using her phone. So she did want to talk about it some more. Míngzé turned his head towards her for a moment.

“It was foolish of you to risk your life,” Míngzé decided to say. Perhaps he was not the right one to say this to her, knowing full well he had done the exact same thing. A deep sigh escaped. “Do you know what it is or does? You said it gave you answers.” He would not admit that he knew what she was talking about, but there was no harm in asking more questions.

It seemed like Ming wasn’t familiar with this place either, so that meant that she would have to find it on her own. She tried to follow the signs and was quite sure that she had taken a wrong turn a few times, since it was taking quite a bit of time before she finally found the place that seemed to be the apothecary here. She handed over the prescription to the person at the counter, waiting for them to give her what she needed. Meanwhile she listened to Ming, frowning a little. It may sound foolish to him that she had risked her life for something like this, but she knew she would do so again if there might be a chance that she would gain more answers.

Let’s head outside first.

She told Ming, taking the bag with medicine. She didn’t think it was a smart idea to have this conversation in the middle of the hospital where there were all kinds of people who could listen in on them. At least it wasn’t that hard to find the way outside and she led Ming to a place where there seemed to be no people around for now. She still thought that it was a bit unfair that she was telling Ming all this, but he seemed to keep things from her. But if she wanted to know about the second piece, she might just have to lay her cards on the table now, though she wasn’t planning on giving him everything.

I don’t know all that much about it. Just that it is a part of something bigger and that its power might hold some dangers.

She wasn’t going to tell him about Shēn and the fact that the man had asked her to bring all the pieces to him. That was something she would keep to herself, she hadn’t told it to Sang either. Though she doubted that Ming would be able to understand if she just told him about a certain deity, not like Sang had. At least somewhere she hoped that he wouldn’t understand.

You remember that item I got at the festival, the gear?
Without it I would have been dead. I made a mistake and apparently some deity wasn’t all too happy with that.
And that was also when I found out that it had been a part of me all this time, even from before I lost my memories most likely.

But she had no idea how that came to pass, she wouldn’t be able to tell him about that, because she literally had no memories of it. She would understand if Ming had no idea what she was talking about, but some part of her didn’t want to give him everything. So leaving the part out that this was all about darkness was something she had done deliberately.

They headed out of the Hospital after getting her medicine, the fresh air a nice change. It felt like his heart skipped a beat as she told him about the dangerous power these objects might possess. Míngzé was glad Sāng had done what he did, even if the result had been a broken jaw. “All the more reason to stay far away from it.” Except that he couldn’t, as it was hidden away in his home.

Having a conversation like this was anything but easy. Each time he had to wait for her to type the message before they could continue. In a way it gave him more time to think and process everything. His eyes narrowed slightly as she continued her explanation. “You are not making any sense,” he said shaking his head. Except that she was. Her story aligned in a way with his own. Míngzé was lucky he held his cane in one hand and Lucina’s arm in the other, or he would’ve reached for his stomach.

He could still remember the voice that had spoken to him back in that temple. The laughing still haunted him. It was best if Lucina remained ignorant of the things that happened to him. “You mean this ‘deity’ has been with you all this time? Does it often talk to you?” A concerned expression had taken over, his mind once more going back to the warnings of the fortune teller. Just who was this girl next to him? He could feel his trust in her slipping away as realization broke through.

She had expected this answer from Ming that it was better to stay away from it, but it wasn’t so easy. He didn’t know what she knew and she wasn’t planning on giving him the rest of the information. She had already given him more than anyone else, mostly because she wanted to trust him. He might have a good reason for lying back then and he had helped her here, so it didn’t feel right to keep it from him.

Of course she wasn’t making sense to him, that was if he hadn’t gone through the same at the very least. It wasn’t something that could easily be explained. She almost died a few times to get an artefact only to have it stolen by someone else. She knew she needed to get stronger, that much she had learned from all this. Or learn how to use her pokemon, since she had never let them fight up to now. She didn’t even know what kind of moves they could use.

She wasn’t surprised when Ming continued on the deity part, it was most likely one of the few things that made sense to him. Though she did find it odd for him to ask her whether it often talked to her. She hadn’t told him that the deity had spoken to her. She narrowed her eyes in suspicion, why would he specifically ask that?

No, it’s more like a feeling. I didn’t even know it was there till I lost it.

It was partially a lie and partially the truth. It had talked to her before, that time with Perry at the very least and it most likely helped her too back then in the alley. But those were things she would never tell Ming about. She had decided that the moment they had happened that she would keep those things to herself.

Míngzé knew he had to be careful with what he said, especially if he wanted to keep up his own facade. It was not easy, but he was managing. While he did not learn much that was news to him, he was now certain that she had found the same thing as he had. It made him wonder if there were more and what they could do.

“Surely you do not trust them, if you nearly died because you made a mistake.”Míngzé knew he didn’t trust them. No matter the fact that he was standing here right now because of them. Even though he agreed to an alliance. It did not mean that he trusted them. Not after everything he’d heard so far. Yet, a part of him was still grateful. No matter what, the affinity that had felt more like a curse, was gone. Not a day had passed wherein he’d missed the Ghost Affinity.

Softly he tugged on her arm, asking Lucina to stand still. “Perhaps it is for the better that you’ve parted ways with it. This item I mean. It does not sound like it has done you much good anyway.” With a calm gaze he looked at her, trying to have some sort of eye contact. “If you even think about getting it back from Sāng, just forget it. You can’t win against his pokémon, they are too strong.” And they will certainly be guarding it one way or another.

Trust was a strange thing, it wasn’t exactly that she trusted the deity, it had left her on her own too many times for that. What she did trust it for was that it would always be there. Now that she knew what it was like without she was very aware of the fact that the deity was there and that that wouldn’t change as long as she didn’t make another mistake. It was a constant that she didn’t know she had till recently, something she hadn’t before.

No, I don’t trust it to save me every time.

She was careful with her wording, knowing that the wrong words might have the wrong effects. But it would still be stupid to trust a deity that had tried to help and save her, but had also done nothing at moments when she did need its help. So these words were the truth and she held his gaze steadily. She still knew it wasn’t good that she had parted with the item, not like this. If she had known this was going to happen she should have just left it with Shēn, but she hadn’t been ready to part with it back then, she had just done about everything to get it and now she was regretting not leaving it with Shēn.

I have no plans for taking it back.

Not at the moment at least, that one could wait or the other one too if he really had two, she wasn’t that stupid. Ming wasn’t giving her the information she really wanted from him, the place of the second piece, but that didn’t matter, she would just focus on the other two for now. She needed to find out whether people would have taken them too or that there were places where they might be. It would mean risking herself once more, but she had to keep telling herself that it would be worth it in the end.

Míngzé breathed in a sharp breath at her response. From what he knew, this deity nearly let her die because of a mistake she made. The only reason she survived was because she had that item on her person. It did not at all sound like this Deity had saved her in any way. Not when they were the one to put her into danger in the first place. Slowly he shook his head. “Not want I meant,” Míngzé said without elaborating on it further. His own feelings towards this Deity were complicated, but trust was not part of it.

For now however, she would not go after the piece Sāng had stolen. That is if he could believe her word on it. Taking it back right now would be suicide anyway. “Good.” With things the way they were now, he had at least time to think it all through. “Has it at least given you the answers you’ve been looking for?” That was what all of this was for, right? Because Lucina wanted to know more about herself. As far as he was aware, these things held no information at all. Unless she knew more about it than he did.

She knew it might not have been what he meant, but it was all he was going to get. That was how far she could speak the truth to him at this point in time and she wasn’t going to change it because it wasn’t what he had meant. He would need to be more specific himself if he expected her to answer in turn.

She knew she had to make plans to be able to get all the pieces. It wasn’t as easy as just finding more of them, not now that she knew that two pieces were already in the possession of someone, but Ming wasn’t going to help her, that much was clear. She would just have to find a way on her own then.

Only a few, which has resulted in more questions.

Every single time she seemed to take one step forward, she took two back too. The fact that she now knew that she most likely had the dark affinity, that there was a deity involved. It didn’t explain anything about her past, it just gave her part of an answer of who she was and had raised more questions about what had happened in the past for her to be like this. Or there was a possibility that she had always been this way, but only her parents would most likely know that and she didn’t even know who they were or if they were even still alive.

This Deity she spoke of hadn't provided him much reason to place complete trust in them. It was why he wanted to warn Lucina in a way, but he feared she was blind to it. Or perhaps she knew and simply didn’t care. If the Fortune Teller had meant her, she was just as trustworthy as this Deity. Míngzé could only wait and see if this would change in the future.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Míngzé asked carefully. So far it did not seem like she was willing to fully open up to him, which was fine. Still, Míngzé wanted to give her the opportunity to do it if she wanted to. The more she told him, the better.

Meanwhile Míngzé came to a halt once more, grabbing his phone in his hand. They both still had to get home and he had to fix a cab for her. It was then that the thought crossed his mind that maybe he should warn Xīyuàn. She had provided Lucina a place to stay at her own home. It was a good thing Xīyuàn wasn’t currently here, so for now he saw no reason why he should alert her about these recent developments.

If she had known more, had a clearer picture maybe, then she might have told Ming. But at the moment she didn’t know much more she could say without revealing too much. If possible, she didn’t want to involve Ming in this part, but a part of her knew that she might need him if he did know about the artefacts. She needed someone on her side. But she wasn’t sure whether Ming would be able to be that person, she would have to wait.

Not yet, I need to know more before I can really tell it to someone else.

Or someone who would understand the parts that she did know, someone who understood more about herself than she herself did, but that wasn’t the case with Ming. He only knew what she told him and he wouldn’t be able to do much with the new information she had.

I will tell you when I know more.

She assured him, though she didn’t know if she could keep the promise. It depended on how things would go, but for now it was better if they both headed back, this day had just been exhausting for her. Reminding her of how she kept making mistakes that seemed to cost her, one way or another and that she couldn’t just turn back time every single time. She knew where she would be heading after this, to the cafe and Kieran. She might just be able to calm down there, to tell Kieran about what had happened at least a little and that she would be fine with working even though she looked like this. He had a right to know now.

SHOWS ITS FACE, LIKE A NIGHTMARE, AGAIN, THIS REPETITIVE PATTERN

From what Míngzé had gathered, everything she did was to discover more answers, yet he doubted that was what she’d found. Each time he asked something related to those answers, he barely ever got a reply. It made him wonder if she had discovered anything at all, or that she was simply clinging to the idea. A silent sigh rolled over his lips as he nodded. “Alright.” For now the mystery that was Lucina remains.

A smile broke through as she promised him that she would tell him if she ever knew more. “Please do, you are not alone in this.” Or at least, that hinged on the information she would uncover. She too had help from a Deity, one that he did not fully trust and when she left the mountains an artifact had also been in her hands. It made him wonder if she was somehow more closely connected to all of this.

In the meanwhile he had managed to order a cab. “A cab will soon be here to drive you home,” Míngzé told her. He would take the bus home as that was cheaper, and he wished some time alone to think all of this through.
